    Product Description
Stay safe while navigating the coastal waters with the Standard Horizon GX3500S Quantum fixed-mount VHF radio. Specifically designed to withstand the day-in, day-out punishment of the harshest marine environments, the Quantum is built around an ITU Class D marine transceiver approved for commercial use. More significantly from the boater's perspective, the unit is factory programmed with all the U.S., Canadian, and international VHF channels--keeping you fully informed of all the latest oceanic activity--along with 10 weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). The variety of channels and features make the radio an essential tool for communicating with other boaters, the Coast Guard, and commercial towing companies, all of whom can offer live-saving assistance during a crisis. The weather alert function, meanwhile, automatically tunes your radio to the appropriate weather channel when a storm starts to gather.

The Quantum's backlit LCD display is one of the largest in the industry, with four lines of alphanumeric characters that boldly display the channel names, DSC call information, and even GPS positions (with Speed Over Ground and Course Over Ground info). Users will also dig the oversized knobs, which allow for quick volume, squelch, and channel adjustments, and the host of scanning modes, which range from Dual Watch (monitors one user-selected channel at the same time as emergency channel 16) and Priority Scan (scans any combination of channels along with a priority channel). And thanks to the 30-watt PA/loud hailer and its four preprogrammed fog signals (including bells and whistles), you can easily notify other boats of your existence. In fact, the Quantum is so advanced that it lets you control the fog horn frequency. It even continues to monitor VHF transmissions while in PA mode--a rarity among marine radios with PA systems.

The Quantum comes with a high-quality microphone that meets the same strict waterproof standards as the radio. More significantly, the microphone incorporates Standard Horizon's ClearVoice noise reduction technology, which eliminates unwanted background noises such as engines and wind. The resulting "loud and clear" transmissions are crisp and easy to understand the first go round, adding to the safety of all involved. Users can also create two additional VHF stations through the same antenna by connecting a pair of separately sold Remote Access Microphones (RAM+). Each submersible microphone includes its own oversized display and keys and lets the user remotely control all VHF, PA, and fog functions from the fly bridge, cockpit, tower, or elsewhere. RAM+ microphones also negate the need for a dedicated intercom system within your boat, as you can easily communicate between the main receiver and both microphones.

The Quantum meets the internationally recognized requirements for Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which allows you to send a distress signal at the touch of a button or exchange position information with other boats or stations. DSC activates a continuous, unattended "mayday" signal that identifies your vessel, reports your latitude and longitude, and gives the time. Furthering the Quantum's safety reputation is its GPS compatibility. When connected to a GPS position receiver, the Quantum can send your GPS position to other boats in an emergency, or it can poll the GPS location of another vessel and display it on your LCD screen. And if a GPS chart plotter is connected, the Quantum will send the information to the plotter's display, helping you easily navigate to the location of the polled vessel. The function is obviously a great time-saver in a crisis, but it's also ideal for tracking down friends or locating a hot fishing spot.

Other details include a strategically positioned emergency channel 16/9 key, a front-projecting 2.2-inch waterproof speaker that easily trumps the sound of a boat engine, and a dedicated WX key for checking the local weather report. Certified for use with closed-construction ship installations over 8 meters in length and carrying more than six passengers, the Quantum measures 9.06 by 3.56 by 5.91 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
